July 4th, 2009
3:00 – 5:30 pm
Area in front of Buncombe County Courthouse
Building on the incredible momentum gathered at the Asheville Tax Day Tea Party, we will reassemble for the Asheville Independence Day Tea Party on July 4, 2009.
Then and there, we will Declare Our Independence from politicians from all parties who have given us over to government pork, confiscatory taxation, soaring national debt, the Federal Reserve Bank’s devaluation of our currency, private industry bailouts,
and endless wars.

The spear has but one point. How do we keep the message from getting diluted? What can we do now to keep the momentum? I have a few ideas if anyone cares.

The facebook site has a bit more feedback and interaction. There are also pics of the last event. I think it is a good idea to get a more cohesive message together. Post your ideas here, or on facebook-ginger
We made up a sign and appeared at the studios at 4 pm on Wednesday for the protest against the ABC propaganda fest scheduled for that night. No one else appeared: not even the organizer! Unless we were in the wrong place (were we?), we are terribly disappointed in the independent movement in Asheville. Even in liberal, progressive, ‘arty’ Sarasota Florida, we were able to draw a crowd of 2000 to the first tea party and the response to subsequent events has been inspiring. Hopefully a few more will show up on July 4, or the media will be vindicated in their view that we’re nothing but a bunch of malcontents with no core dedication to what we espouse. Congrats to the one, lone pickup truck at the exit from Rt 26 who put up his homemade sign and flag! You’re a true patriot, even if you stand alone.
Hello Paige,
Our protest was actually scheduled for Monday, with follow up by those who wished to come out again on Tuesday.
There were about 2000 Asheville area patriots at the Tax Day Tea Party and we expect a larger showing at the July 4th Tea Party. The folks in this area are by no means uninspired. The fact was, this ABC protest was very late notice and the people who make up our group tend to have regular obligations to attend to.
You can be assured that we will be out in force, again, on July 4th, and at subsequent occasions.
I am sorry that your experience was disappointing. I hope that this less than happy beginning is not an ending for you.

Congressman Heath Shuler has shown once and for all that he has abandoned his “moderate” Blue Dog Democrat colors.
On Friday, Mr. Shuler gave Nancy Pelosi one of the seven votes needed to pass the largest Energy Tax bill in history by a vote of 219 to 212. 44 Democrats voted with the GOP against Speaker Pelosi including almost every one of the moderate Blue Dog Democrats.
Mr. Shuler sided with Speaker Pelosi while knowing, as the Wall Street Journal wrote, that “Members who vote for this climate bill are voting for what is likely to be the biggest tax in American history” and it will result in “higher prices that will show up not just in electricity bills or at the gas station but in every manufactured good, from food to cars.”
One’s opinions on climate change don’t matter when judging this monster because it doesn’t require China, India, Russia, and others to change their behavior one bit, making the environmental argument for it ridiculous.
The true Blue Dogs are much closer to the GOP’s “all of the above” American Energy Act which focuses more on domestic exploration for oil and natural gas, a renewed commitment to build 100 nuclear power plants in the next 20 years, investments in renewables, alternative energy technologies and creating incentives for conservation.
The story is the same when it comes to the bill that would strip workers of the right to a secret ballot. This bill is nothing but a thank you to the labor unions for their help in the last elections and it should offend every voter in Western NC. Again, most of the Blue Dogs representing conservative rural districts like ours are saying “No” to this offense to American values while Mr. Shuler is saying “Yes”.
The story was the same when the House voted on President Obama’s Pres. Obama’s $3.6 trillion budget (creating the largest deficit since 1942). Mr. Shuler voted “Yes” to this budget even though it does not fit even the most tortured definitions of fiscal responsibility or “pay as you go” principles that he has claimed to hold in both campaigns.
Voters will remember that Mr. Shuler voted “No” on the so-called Stimulus Bill while the press attention was very high on a very close vote. Why could he not stand the same ground when facing the equally irresponsible budget outline from the Obama White House?
Mr. Shuler has stayed true to his Blue Dog colors on social issues and for that we are grateful. However, it is not enough to vote conservative on a few hot button, high-profile issues while becoming more and more liberal on all the others.
Why then is Mr. Shuler dropping the “Blue” and becoming a liberal Democrat?
The answer is as close as the success of the Obama campaign at creating a huge liberal network in Asheville and the fear on Mr. Shuler’s part of a primary challenge in 2010.
All one has to do is take a look at the blogs and Twitter messages of the “progressive” network in Asheville to see endless threats such as this one from longtime activist Cecil Bothwell: “Heath looks at 2010 and the activist electorate that can either keep him in office or find a progressive replacement.” Asheville liberal leaders such as Bothwell, Gordon Smith, and the bloggers at the leftwing “Scrutiny Hooligans” have kept the pressure on Mr. Shuler ever since the 2008 elections. They now feel that they have the numbers to push Mr. Shuler aside in a Democratic primary if he does not turn left.
Mr. Shuler has chosen to vote with the liberals and then hope that this district won’t notice the difference. That is a bad choice for him and our country.

We were at the July 4th Tea Party and were very impressed with the turn out. Our son, all of 19, had never participated in any type of political event. He surprised his father and I when he got up on the steps of the court house and spoke out against nationalized health care. His impromtu speech, given without so much as an umm, or ah, hit right on the money. We are hoping he will continue in his desire to speak out against bad policy and the out of control spending our farce of a government is indulging in. We will be a the July 17th protest in front of Heath Shuler’s office. Its time for the backbone of this country, the middle class, to stand up and say NO MORE SPENDING AND NO MORE SOCIALIST PROGROMS.
God Bless America and God Bless Our Warriors defending her.
I posted a video about this on the site. I don’t know where your videos go or I would link to it. Here is a link to the video on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8OD7SOaLcoY
